Assessment and Planning: Before any cutting begins, the tree must be assessed to determine its size, condition, and potential hazards. Factors such as the tree’s lean, surrounding obstacles, and proximity to structures or power lines are considered. A plan is then developed for safely bringing the tree down.
Clearing the Area: The area around the tree is cleared of any obstacles, debris, or vegetation that could interfere with the cutting process or pose a safety risk to the workers or property.
Establishing Escape Routes: Workers establish clear escape routes to ensure their safety in case the tree falls unpredictably. These routes should be free of obstacles and provide a clear path to safety.
Equipment Setup: Necessary equipment such as chainsaws, ropes, rigging gear, and personal protective equipment (PPE) are prepared and checked for proper functioning.
Climbing (if applicable): In some cases, if the tree is too large or inaccessible for conventional cutting methods, a tree climber equipped with specialized climbing gear may ascend the tree to facilitate cutting from the top down.
Making the Cuts: The tree is typically cut down in sections, starting from the top and working downward. The primary cuts include:
Notching: A notch is cut into the side of the tree facing the direction of the intended fall. This notch helps control the direction of the tree’s fall.
Backcut: A horizontal cut is made on the opposite side of the tree, a few inches above the notch. This cut allows the tree to fall in the desired direction.
Felling Cut: A final cut, known as the felling cut, is made to release the tree, causing it to fall in the predetermined direction.
Controlled Falling: As the tree begins to fall, workers use ropes and rigging techniques to guide its descent and ensure it falls safely without causing damage to nearby structures or property.
Cleaning Up: Once the tree is down, branches and foliage are trimmed off, and the trunk may be cut into smaller sections for removal or processing. The area is then cleared of debris, and any remaining stump may be ground down or removed.
Disposal: Depending on the arrangement with the tree service company, the debris may be hauled away, chipped on-site for mulch, or left for the property owner’s disposal.
